Why Replace the Old HID Outdoor Fixtures with New LED Fixtures

Time:2016-01-04 Views:2536 Compile:SUNPER

The HID lighting which is metal halide and high pressure sodium has been the basic light source for the outdoor applications for quite a long time until recently. LED is now the best option for new construction and thus it is fit for use. The already existing HID outdoor light fixtures can be retrofitted to the LED or replace them using the new LED fixture. With all the lighting projects, each situation is special and thus it is crucial to understand your goals.

You need to ensure that your fixture is in a decent shape since the main goal is to save energy as well as reduce the maintenance costs. Retrofit is probably the best option. If the fixtures are not providing you with adequate lighting and are in rough shape, then getting a new fixture is the best. Below is an overview of some of the factors you should consider for each option.

Retrofitting HID with LED

There are so many available options for retrofitting the HID fixtures to LED. Having a wide range of options is good but it is important to consider some things. Thus, sometimes it becomes a bit harder to get a LED retrofit option which will provide similar light levels in order to be able to fit into the existing fixture. Having this in mind, the first step should be determining what you have installed currently and measuring how much room you have in the existing fixture.

It is also worth considering voltage. The voltage of the outdoor lighting may range from 120 to 480 volts. However, once you get above 277 volts, the retrofit now becomes limited. The last factor to consider is color. The high pressure sodium lamps normally provide a yellow orange color while the metal halide provides a white color. There are more white LED retrofit options than the yellow ones for the outdoor LED retrofits. Therefore, knowing the color you want is very vital. Once you have analyzed all these factors, you can now determine the options available for your application.

New LED fixtures

Going with the new fixtures is always the best option. This is because new fixtures last longer and they also run more efficiently thereby providing more light compared to the retrofit options. This is because the fixture is specifically built for LEDs. Fixtures can be retrofitted when installing the LED in a fixture that was built for HID light source. There are many options available for the new LED fixtures than the LED retrofits as they are available from the LED wall-packs to LED flood light fixtures as well as LED high bay lights. Thus, there is no much concern with what you have currently.

The only thing you should consider is how the current fixture is being mounted and most important how much light you require. The mounting assists in ensuring ease of installation when you get a new fixture. It is quite an easy process to run photometric report for new fixtures in order to ensure that you will get enough light levels. By replacing the HID outdoor light fixtures with LED fixtures, you will see paybacks within five years.

Generally, there aim is to provide customers with optimal lighting solution by using the new LED fixture.
